A bit about cleaning of floors

It is important so your floor can last a lifetime, that it is regularly looked after. It is recommended that your floor is cleaned weekly by using a vacuum/sweeping or a damp cloth to remove any surface dust/grit. This ensures that dirt is removed and walked into the floor causing scratching to the surface. Any marks that are on the flooring can be removed using a little bit of white spirit. Floors can be washed using a mild cleaning solution, using a well wrung cloth.

Some info about sanding floors

If you already have wooden flooring, rather than renewing the whole floor, depending on whether the flooring is still in good enough condition you could consider restoring making it look like new again.

You can use the best finishes in the world but still obtain a poor result if the sanding hasn't been done properly.

For the best results you should consider getting someone in to do the sanding for you, but if you want to try it yourself take a look at our page overviewing the phases involved.

Protecting your floor

Depending on the condition of your wooden floor, you might want to look at the section on Sanding Floors before applying floor protection.

For the best results it is recommended that the floor is abraded, which removes any roughness left by grain raising caused during sanding. (This is where broken wood fibres have stuck up from the floor boards as a result of absorbing the coating.) The abrasion porcess is like a light sanding process removing the surface of the sealant smoothing out any ripples.

The final process is to apply the top coat to the flooring, it is very important for the best finish to apply enough layers of a good quality top coat.

The type of coat applied depends on what the floor is used for and where it is located. Coats are available for heavy traffic such as commercial use to light use found in the home.
